Thank you to the Hamilton’s, Sam Moore, Feryl Masters, Gary Mann, Carl Potter and his local friends, Susan Wasilewski and to all of the behind the scenes volunteers for the wonderful work and planning Saturday!
We vacuumed 95% of Williams Hall, tore out 90% of the tile in the kitchen and kitchen, continued tearing out lath in Dix House and planned with Gary Mann next steps! This Saturday is a day of rest for honoring family time for Thanksgiving! We are so very Thankful for our Shelter Neck UU Family! Thank you!!! Saturday at Shelter Neck the crew of volunteers were amazing! They completed tearing out the bathrooms in Williams, the wash area linoleum, threw out mattresses, furniture, and created a locked chapel door! Thank you to all the volunteers: Jane Harrison, UUFR, Jim Hurdis, UUFR, Robert Perkins, Community Church of Chapel Hill, Sam Moore, UUFR, Andy Wasilewski, UUFR/UUCKinston, Logan Hamilton, UUC Greensboro and Community Youth Group, and his Dad, Rob of UUC Greensboro, and Susan Wasilewski, UUCKinston/UUFR.
Additional thanks go out to the Youth Group under the guidance of RE Director, CoraMcCold, of the UU Church Belmont, MA who have volunteered to come to North Carolina and assist with Shelter Neck UU Camp flood relief and flood relief in New Bern! What an amazing gift! We cannot wait to meet your group of 30 youth and adults in February! Join us again Saturday, November 17, from 9:30 am -4:30 pm to complete tearing out walls and plywood floor in Williams, continue taking out the lath in Dix House and begin to tear out the tile dining and kitchen floors. Friday, November 2nd: Jane Hunt from UUFR led a group from UUFR to work! Those include Jessica Sinha, Bill MacMillan, John McLain and Dianne Irwin! Feryl Masters and Shelly Duncan from UU Congregation of Greenville were on site UCONCI Board reps! Andy Wasilewski (UUFR and UUCK) met them and spent the afternoon and evening meeting with FEMA and attending the community FEMA meeting to learn more about the community needs and our own Shelter Neck options. Thank you to all! Saturday, November 3rd: Logan Hamilton from UU Congregation of Greensboro and Community Youth Group, Rev. Justin Osterman(UUFR), Sam Moore (UUFR), Debbie and William Robertson (Community UU), Andy Wasilewski (UUFR and UUCK), Susan Wasilewski (UUCK-UUFR) and our wonderful contractor, Gary Mann of Winnabow met to tear out walls and discuss reconstruction plans. Special thanks to Debbie and William Robertson for donating a portable outdoor picnic table to hold meetings, eat and take breaks! Sunday, November 4th: Thank you to the UU Congregation of Santa Fe and Elizabeth Swope for sharing the pass the plate the first Sunday of December for Shelter Neck UU Camp Restoration! Monday, November 5th: Thank you to Jim and Dianne Saunders Duncan for their kind donation of beautiful cabinets that lock for for storage! Also thank you for the temporary storage of these until we have a storage area to keep them until December! Thank you to all for your dedication! Join us for Saturday, November 10th at 9:30 am-4:30 pm to continue to prepare for reconstruction! Pizza, water and sodas will be provided on site for lunch! WE NEED YOU!!! We need volunteers at Shelter Neck UU Camp for the next two Saturdays!
November 3 and 10 to attempt to complete tearing out walls to prepare to sanitize and treat wood with a mold treatment! This must happen prior to lifting buildings and restoration. We appreciate everyone’s generous time! Yesterday was a busy day at Shelter Neck. Continued work on tearing out the walls at Dix House. We were particularly happy to welcome Allison, Ethan and Logan who are counselors and former campers from Shelter Neck UU Summer Camp. They were on fall break this week and made some time to come to Shelter Neck. Thanks, friends.
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh (UUFR) dedicated their Sunday offering on October 14th to Shelter Neck Recovery! Thank you so much for your generosity. The Community Church of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist will dedicated November 4 Share the Plate Sunday to Shelter Neck as well.

Walls uncovered in parlor to ceiling, except for foam insulation board. Lower walls uncovered in Dining Room Lower walls uncovered in Hallways Furniture mostly cleared out except that being used for work Shelves in hall removed Bathroom counter, toilet stall partitions, and cabinets removed Most of lower walls removed in large bathroom, Holes opened up in almost all Dix first floor walls for air circulation Bedrooms cleared out Pantry cleared out Chapel Pulpit removed for restoration Dishes taken for cleaning or stored on deck (I think) Most plaster carried out to woods for disposal Wallboard, paneling, and furniture carried to roadside |
