Thanks to those who came on Saturday for our first look at the damage

Saturday we had a good crew come for our first look at Shelter Neck after the flood. Thanks to Debbie, William, Delthea, Chris, Becky, Jim, Dianne, Susan, Andy and James for being there and for your generosity.  The doors were swollen shut. The high water marks were between waist and shoulder high in the buildings.  The flood turned over refrigerators, pews, tables and chairs.  We found the steps to Williams Hall in several places -- across the road and in the crepe myrtles.  There were fish drying in the grass and crayfish in odd places.  We quickly moved to preserve the original art and precious one of a kind things.  We turned off the breakers, inspected the water pump, checked the shed, and took pictures.  Then we started carrying wet items to the road to be picked up the county and carrying dry fabric items out of the buildings to save them from the mold and mildew already forming.   It was hard to see our beloved Shelter Neck damaged but we imagined that it might have been so much worse that we were relieved to see so much intact.  Surely a lot of work lies ahead but the heart of Shelter Neck is beating steadily.

Tuesday, tomorrow members of the Board will be at Shelter Neck again to meet with historical building consultants to learn about best practices for flood recovery.  Also we are going to try to get water running for clean up.
